Scott Holland May 4, 2009 The Leamington Jr. B Flyers held their annual spring try-out camp this past Saturday and Sundaty at the Heinz arena. The club has named Steve Price as their head for 2009/10 and although no assistant coaches, or GM, have been named yet, it was a well-run camp. Flyers' president commented on the lack of a GM, "Several people have applied for the position and the interview process is on-going." With over 75 prospects in the camp, Price and head scout Brad Daigneault carrefully eyed the action of the six camps played over the two days. "In all the years I've been with this (Flyers) club, this is one of the best, if not the best ever," Price said. "The skill level is very high and it has been an extremely competitive camp for only a handful of spots that are open on next year's squad. "Our openings may depend on how many players we lose to universities," he added. The physical nature of the six contests was evident from the outset and most of the 75 players who participated showed enough talent to form a couple of Jr. B teams. From the stands it was evident that the highly skilled players could form a team which would out-class the '08/09 Flyers. The majority of players invited to the tryout camp were from the tri-county area and featured approximately 20 Southpoint Minor hockey grads as well as about 15 who played in the Great Lakes Jr. C league this past season. Among those players on the ice were many notable names, several of them sons of former Flyers, and five whose 1994 birthdate makes them unable to play for the club this coming season. Flyer vets from last season did the officiating and two former Flyers, Jordan Kniaziew and Steve Peters helped coach the teams. About 30 to 40 of the players will be invited back to the team's main August camp according to Price. Flyers Hold Year-End Banquet - by C. Scott Holland The Leamington Jr. B Flyers held their year-end banquet Sunday at the Rhine-Danube club. A total of roughly 80 players, parents and hockey club personel attended. Head coach Steve Price summarized the 2008/09 season, "We had some adversity, personel changes and injuries, yet our team was able to piut it all behind them and make a good playoff run. Throughout the season our team was very community-oriented as the team got involved in many events around the area. Of course, the season would not have been so successful without the hard work from the players and coaching staff, the many fans who attended games, our game sponsors and volunteers, and the Flyers executive whose fundraising efforts kept the team running. So many of us gave their their time and we care about the Flyers' abilities to learn this game. To our graduating players and returning team members, we want you to be the best you can be." The first award presented was the team's top regular season scorer trophy which went to Travis Winkworth. Also, Winkworth was named the hardest working Flyer. The Rookie of the Year was garnered by Shawn Quigley while Adam Norman was presented the Unsung Hero trophy. Defenseman of the Year was Nick Rivait while Adam Dunmore took home the Most Gentlemanly Player award. In a rare awards feat, goaltender Mike Morissette was named the Regular Season MVP and was the co-reciprient of the Playoff MVP award. Teammate Cale Peltier shared the Playoff MVP honors with Morissette. Finally, the Floyd "Butch" Harris Memorial Award for Volunteer of the Year was given to Warren Dunford for his outstanding fundraising efforts. The Flyers announced that their Spring Mini-Camp will take place May 2, 3 and coach Steve Price said, "Already we have about 120 applicants for the tryout camp." Only a handful of spots are expected to be open for next season's Flyers squad. |
