Rookies Impress Flyer Coaches - by C. Scott Holland

After several days of hard practices, about 45 prospective Flyers rookies played an inter-squad contest last Thursday night. The Flyers' coaching staff and GM Peter Anthony eyed the players from rinkside while former Flyer Steve Peters coached the red team and Flyers' president Doug Scaddan handled the white squad. Assistant coach Steve Price said, 'The players impressed us with an extremely high skill level and one must understand that not all of the players are eligible to play for us this season - some we are looking at for a year or two down the road. One of the Flyers' objectives is to help these players move on to the next hockey level.' Many local players took part in the game. Greg Koestler, Koddi Quick, Shawn Chorba, Brett Babkirk, Cheyenne Matheson, Dustin Woelk, Kyle Bowman, Nick Butts, Dean Mastronardi, Craig Adamson, Derek Weil, Blake Scott, Josh Tremblay, Myles Doan, Gabe Gervais and Sean St. Louis were just a few that are vying for a handful of spots on this season's edition of the Flyers. The result of the game was a 10-2 decision in favor of team red. Kyle Bowman, Nick Butts, and Kyle Forini notching pairs while Dean Mastronardi, Derek Weil, Michael Sollazo and Ryan Knell tabbed one each. Donovan Plummer and John Croley scored team white's goals. One piece of bad news given to the coaching staff afterwards was that forward and veteran player Jeff Hogan would not be coming back this season. Hogan cited a heavy work load at university as the main reason and said he doesn't plan on playing any hockey this year.The Flyers' staff wished Jeff all the best in his future endeavors and thanked him for being an integral part of the club the past few seasons.
